Gion Berlijn

Gion Berlijn is a designer from Eindhoven who creates and curates interactive experiences, with a strong focus on club culture. His work often challenges the perception of forgotten or raw materials and objects, reimagining them through new functions that respond to their context, be it location, people, or technology.

As a musician, he explores futuristic yet familiar sounds, crafting immersive atmospheres for the dancefloor.

He is also the founder and director of BREEK, a platform that collaborates with young artists and designers to present their work in club settings. Exploring how art can take on a more significant role in nightlife.

Monoculture

This installation explores the role of digital media in human communication and the

spread of information. The internet and digital communication often present themselves

as liberating and connecting innovations, but in reality they fragment public life.

Contagious narratives, often radical or controversial in nature, spread quickly across

platforms and erode other narratives. Diverse voices are made silent by algorithms, and

complex issues are reduced to one- or two-sided conflicts that polarize people into

groups.

Digital communication also enables instantaneous and impulsive reactions. It distracts

us from thinking deeply about dominant power relations or possible futures by creating

an obsession with the present.

The 32 CRT screens and lasers in the installation represent a network through which a

narrative spreads, gradually changing the images on the screens until all display the

same signal
